Built: 2003
Project Type: Project Management and Systems Integration for Christmas Lighting
Project cost: circa £120,000 ex VAT and fees
Lighting Design by: Speirs and Major Associates
Case Study No: 3022
For the opening of the Swiss Re Building in 2003, Speirs and Major were commissioned to design an animated Christmas light show in the very top of this iconic building. Light Perceptions were engaged to production manage the installation and commissioning of the system which involved over seven tonnes of moving lights and rigging all suspended from the crown of the building – over a floor that was still being laid!
The lighting design by the late Jonathan Speirs [1958 – 2012] featured a beautiful snowfall effect and, quite typically of Jonathan’s enthusiastic style to create the best that a lighting designer could achieve, used the largest mirror ball that we could find in Europe!
This was one of many projects undertaken with Jonathan over a ten year period. No two projects were ever the same but all were stimulating, challenging and above all – tremendous fun.
